I did not feel worthy of honouring the great Nelson Mandela with a song, however, while reading his autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom", the words for this song kept coming to me, relentlessly and chronologically as each chapter of his life was revealed to me in the book. They would not stop, neither would the words get ahead of me till I had finished the lengthy and brilliant book. The last verse literally fell into place as I finished reading the final chapter, and the song was complete. This is my small contribution to fighting racial prejudice and spreading Nelson Mandela's compassion and wisdom. A portion of profits will be donated to Nelson Mandela charities in South Africa.

This song is dedicated to the life and work of Victor Jara and to all those countless others lost to Pinochet.
Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez was a Chilean teacher, theater director, poet, singer-songwriter, political activist and the voice of his country's dispossessed.
On September 11, 1973, Chilean troops under the command of General Augusto Pinochet mounted a coup against the Allende government. Among many others Jara was seized and taken to the Estadio Chile, a large sports stadium. There he was held for four days, deprived of food and sleep. He was tortured, and his hands were broken by soldiers who told him to try to keep on playing the guitar with his damaged hands. But Jara continued to sing "Venceremos" and began writing a new song describing the carnage going on in the stadium, as many of those imprisoned were killed; the words of the new song were smuggled out by a prisoner who survived. On September 15, Jara was taken to a deserted area and shot

Song For Victor Jara was written out of despair for the plight of this man, who was tortured and killed by the fascists in Pinochet’s military coup that overthrew and murdered Salvador Allende, the left wing elected president of Chile in 1973. It has become to be known as the other September 11th. I was asked to perform this song on the 25th anniversary of the coup in front of an audience of Chileans at Marrickville town hall in Sydney. I had the song translated into Spanish and read it aloud before performing the song in English. Everyone in the audience knew who Victor Jara was, it was a powerful moment for me. On a trip to Chile a few years ago, I visited his grave in Santiago.

Que le sang retombe sur vous
Interessante, ancorché tutt'altro che rara in questo vasto mondo, la “parabola” di Gustave Hervé, all'epoca direttore de La Guerre Sociale che bene abbiamo imparato a conoscere durante questa mesata di Couté in quarantena. Paragoni italiani non ne mancano, a partire dallo stesso Mussolini; con saltapicchiamenti vari e in varie direzioni ricorderei anche Curzio Malaparte, Nicola Bombacci e diversi altri, anche con casi ben più recenti. Certo che questo Hervé è un caso veramente singolare. Prima anarchico radicale, poi ultranazionalista, poi dichiaratamente fascista ma “filosemita” che se la prende con Hitler per “aver fatto tante cose buone rovinando tutto con l'antisemitismo” (quanto mi ricorda certi destroni italiani attuali...), poi “pétainista” autoritario ma che vitupera la Germania e Hitler, e infine ha un flirtone con De Gaulle... muore il 25 ottobre 1944. Sono archibugi a miccia... Nel 1655, durande l'assedio di Rorà, nel corso delle Pasque Piemontesi, Giosuè Janavel e pochi altri armati di quei fucili tennero testa all'esercito del Ducato di Savoia...
Non erano certo canne molto precise, lunghissime e pesanti, ma le palle potevano spaccare in due il tronco di un bell'alberello...
Se poi si arrivava al corpo a corpo, i valdesi avevano sempre un utile ed efficace strumento, molto elegante, anche se derivato dalla classica roncola agricola:

Vorrei dare un piccolo contributo per il significato di "diplopenià"- Nelle lezioni di buzuki on-line si legge:
Η πένα κινείται συνεχώς πάνω κάτω στην διπλοπενιά e cioè il plettro si muove continuamente su e giù, ottenendo un suono analogo a quello che nel mandolino viene chiamato "trillo".
Segnalo inoltre che sul "tubo", al link indicato a parte, si trova (per ora) l'intero film con le sue canzoni.
La trama, anche se edulcorata per il film musicale, contiene una piccola guerra del lavoro, in cui l'imbianchino-cantante Grigoris, scritturato come artista low-cost per arrotondare il salario, è costretto a scegliere tra il lavoro edile e la chitarra, perchè si addormenta sul lavoro diurno.
Una curiosità: il suonatore di buzuki a sinistra è il giovane Stamatis Kokotas, cantante e compositore che nel disco "ENA MESSIMERI" con le canzoni di Stavros Xarchakos, interpreta proprio questa canzone che l'ha portato poi al successo.

Dal profilo facebook di Rocco Rosignoli: "Oggi mi sono alzato tardi. Perché ieri sera ho fatto le ore piccole: mi ero imposto di chiudere un libro su cui sto lavorando da più di un anno. E ce l’ho fatta: ho chiuso la revisione della prima stesura, e ho già chiesto ad amici fidati di dargli un’occhiata e farmi osservazioni, suggerirmi cambiamenti. È un saggio che ho voluto dedicare a Leonard Cohen, il cantautore che più di tutti mi ha flashato. Ho voluto esplorare l’apporto che la sua cultura ebraica ha dato alla sua produzione, che è di carattere universale. È stato un lavoro lungo, svolto con amore, e col maggior rigore di cui ero capace. E mentre scrivevo, il contatto continuo con le sue canzoni mi ha fatto venire voglia di tradurle. Alcune le avete già sentite, senza sapere che erano frutto di un progetto più ampio. Qui vi do in pasto la mia versione di “Story of Isaac”, dedicandola a chi ancora oggi viene sacrificato sugli altari di qualche ideologia spacciata per verità indiscutibile."
