Just a pair of words from translator's side. This is a song about the origin of an Italian colloquial word, “ambaradan”. A word not supposed to be entried in common Italian-English dictionaries: it means confusion, chaos, “a mess”. It is considered a “nice word”, but its origìn isn't nice at all. It comes from the Battle of Amba Aradam, in Ethiopia, where the Italian troops slaughtered in February 1936 over 20,000 Ethiopians making extensive use of chemical mass-destruction weapons (arsine and mustard gas bombs). It's the story, and history, of all the massacres the “good Italians” conceived and put into practice during the Abyssinian colonial war of 1935-36, when Mussolini's fascist regime attacked and annexed Ethiopia to the “Italian Empire”. Da notare che, per uno dei famosi "capricci del destino", questa canzone è stata inserita esattamente nell'anniversario del massacro dei copti al monastero di Debra Libanos, ordinato da Rodolfo Graziani il 21 maggio 1937. Questa pagina è dedicata anche alla memoria di quelle persone.

Aggiungo che "La marcia dei suicidi" è stata inizialmente pubblicata anche in "Ballate di fine comunismo", ma solo su una parte dei cd, che tra l'altro avevano anche un ordine delle canzoni diverso da quello "ufficiale".
Insomma, un po' come il Gronchi rosa :-)
