Du chef d'oeuvre comique du cinéma italien, qui est aussi, à sa manière, un chef d'oeuvre antimilitariste. Les deux films avec comme protagoniste Brancaleone da Norcia
interprété magistralement par un inoubliable Vittorio Gassman) … Que va-t-on faire en Terre Sainte ? Mais s'enrichir est une chose évidente ! D'autant que le « Saint Sépulchre » et autres couillonnades du genre , comme toutes les plus tragiques conneries, alors comme aujourd'hui, sont à la base de toutes les diverses croisades qui n'ont certes pas cessé d'exister. Maintenant, cela s'appelle « Choc des civilisations » ou « Guerre au terrorisme ». [R.V.]

Dis-moi, Lucien l'âne mon ami, toi qui as parcouru le monde et qui t'es traîné dans toutes les montagnes de la Méditerranée, si comme moi, tu ne trouves pas cette chanson un peu énigmatique... Tu vois, je viens de la traduire et je n'aperçois pas bien de quel ressuscité elle nous parle. Ce ne peut-être notre ami Joseph, bien qu'il ait « disparu » avec son uniforme et son fusil en haut des Alpes et que de glissement en glissement, d'avalanche en avalanche, il eût pu en effet comme Öetzi ressurgir au pied du mont. Mais voilà, s'il est officiellement mort en haut d'un mont du Piémont, il est ressuscité quelque part en Sardaigne, et dans la plaine encore et même dans la ville. La milizia del Michigan è stata un’organizzazione paramilitare (ufficialmente defunta nel 2000 ma in realtà ancora attiva in piccoli gruppi) fondata nel 1994 da tal Norman Olson, un ex militare di carriera, come risposta alle presunte nuove ingerenze del governo federale durante l’amministrazione Clinton e contro le iniziative di legge volte ad introdurre controlli sulla libera vendita di armi. La milizia del Michigan è considerata un’organizzazione terroristica perché è stato dimostrato il suo coinvolgimento in attentati come quello terribile realizzato da Timothy McVeigh (che tuttavia non era membro del gruppo) ad Oklahoma City nel 1995.

Celebri le cover di Joan Baez (1971) e Judy Collins (1975).
Segnalo anche la recentissima versione offerta da Bettye LaVette, una delle più belle voci del vecchio e del nuovo soul, nel suo ultimo, splendido disco “Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook”.
Un brano che ben si accompagna ad almeno un paio di altre belle e fondamentali canzoni già presenti su questo sito, Working Class Hero di John Lennon e Feel Like a Number di Bob Seger.
Una canzone che è al tempo stesso inno alla classe operaia e sua cinica contemplazione da parte di chi non ha lavorato un solo giorno nella sua vita, ossia Jagger e compagni.
Non ho trovato riscontri precisi ma ho la sensazione che il titolo si ispiri all’omonimo, bellissimo e stracensurato film del 1954 diretto da Herbert J. Biberman, scritto da Michael Wilson e prodotto da... (Continues)

Una bellissima canzone d’amore (famosa anche nella versione di Aretha Franklin, di un anno successiva) che, nelle intenzioni del suo autore, Hal David, voleva essere la preghiera di una donna per il ritorno dell’amato dalla guerra in Vietnam (fonte: en.wikipedia). David, come dimostra pure un’altra canzone dell’album, The Windows of the World, era molto preoccupato per la guerra, anche perché all’epoca aveva due figli in età da soldato.

Ai brulotti si ricorse moltissimo durante la guerra d'indipendenza greca, poiché le due flotte contrapposte erano molto diseguali per armamento. Shiloh Town
La Battaglia di Shiloh, conosciuta anche come Battaglia di Pittsburg Landing, fu uno dei maggiori fatti d'arme del fronte occidentale della Guerra di secessione americana, avvenuto tra il 6–7 aprile 1862, nel SO del Tennessee. Le forze confederate sotto i Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston e Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard lanciarono un attacco a sorpresa contro l'esercito unionista di Ulysses S. Grant e furono a un passo dal vanificare la sua invasione del Tennessee. Una fiera resistenza unionista e l'arrivo di rinforzi dal Gen. Don Carlos Buell il 7 aprile fecero mutare la sorte del combattimento e le forze confederate furono costrette a ritirarsi da uno dei più cruenti campi di battaglia fino a quel momento dell'intera storia degli Stati Uniti d'America.

Chamaroot non lo tradurrei AMICO che si traduce FREUND. Piuttosto tradurrei Camerata Kamarade che nei dialetti Bavaro-tirolesi si pronuncia Kamarot. Non voglio fare il professore ma, avendo vissuto tanti lustri in provincia di Bolzano conosco bene il dialetto sud-tirolese, meglio dell' Hochdeutsch. Viderschaun, sou isch.

Le 6 décembre 2007 à Turin à la fabrique Thyssen Krupp éclata un incendie à cause de la rupture d'une vanne. Une chose simple, un incident qui aurait produire en Allemagne seulement un peu de peur mais qui, là, fit sept victimes : Rocco Marzo, Antonio Schiavone, Roberto Scola, Angelo Laurino, Rosario Rodinò, Bruno Santino, Giuseppe Demasi.
À cette tragédie due à l'incurie et à la non-observance des règles les plus élémentaires de sécurité au travail, à ce massacre, l'instinct le plus fort commande de répondre avec un hurlement d'indignation, et c'eût été la manière la plus simple.

This song is partly about the tragic life of Léon Theremin, inventor of one of the of the first electronic instruments in the 1930's. He ended up owing too much money to banks to continue developing his futuristic devices. So he returned to Russia, only to be thrown into a concentration camp until he was released and forced to invent things of Military significance (such as the world's first bugging device).
I brought Albert Glinsky's biography of Theremin but I couldn't read it because it was too depressing. It is a great injustice that of the smartest people of the last 100 years could not find the freedom to pursue his dreams in either "Democratic" or "Socialist" states due to the respective economic and ideological restrictions that each culture imposed to discourage individuals them from pursuing anything idealistic or radical.

"If you ever see a compilation LP (Vinyl) called "Songs Of The Protest Era" it is absolutely one of the best records ever made. Every song features incredibly weird guitar sounds/timing changes, genius lyrics that cut to bone and most importantly the most naive and defiant melodies and harmonies ever written.
In my homage to the genre I think I got the lyrics right but my guitar playing is too post-punk and I don't have the angelic voice required to deliver the lyrical venom in a deceptively sweet voice.
People dug it when we performed this live with an ad lib harmonica solo in the middle. Don't like playing it anymore however because it doesn't fit in with the rest of the songs and it's too depressing..
and my political contention is....
