Terry Whitmore

Album: Soldier by soldier
Inspired and based-on Terry Whitmore's book "Memphis-Nam-Sweden". Terry Whitmore was a black GI who deserted the Vietnam War after being injured in a fire-fight. He denounced the American government strongly afterwards for it's racism and arrogance to invade a country to "liberate" it while blacks and others in the U.S. were being oppressed and murdered. He became a symbol in Europe of the American GI anti-war movement and the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who followed a similar path during what the Vietnamese call the "American War".

I have recently come back to it and rewritten it changing the chords, structure and half of the lyrics. I added some harmonica to it towards the end too. I am much happier with this song now."

Seventy Virgins refers to the fantasy that suicide bombers believe, that they will be martyrs, greeted in Heaven by 70 virgins. The song lays out the crisis in the Middle East and how all sides base their actions on some sort of fantasy.
The song was written after seeing Pakistani rock band, Junoon. They're known all over the world for their activism for peace between India and Pakistan and are speaking out on the issues of the post Sept. 11 situation.

I grew up like all my generation in a world in which the possibility of an all-out nuclear war between the USA and Russia seemed like a real possibility. The Cuban missile crisis – Dr. Strangelove – fallout shelters. I wrote several songs around these nightmare themes, but this one seemed to sum up the madness best. It may seem a little less likely now - but the weapons are still there and are still just as dangerous. And they are in more hands than ever and growing. This is no time to be complacent and this song is still relevant. I made this recording about 1983 on a very simple cassette deck in the house I rented in Mendocino, playing on the old piano that came with the house. A rare example of my piano playing… :-) "

Per chi, giustamente impressionato dalle orecchie in salamoia spedite alla Porta dai vincitori di Missolungi, sia tentato da qualche generalizzazione sui Turchi (o sugli Albanesi, o sugli Egiziani, o magari sui Musulmani), riporto e traduco le parole che Alexis Zorbàs dice al suo padrone, quando, giunti a Creta, questi vuole sapere se anche Alexis vi sia già stato e che avventure vi abbia avuto. Certo che Zorbàs vi è stato – dove mai non è stato ? - e a dare una mano ai Cretesi durante la rivolta del 1896 , lui che in Macedonia era un Komitagis, cioè un combattente delle pulizie etniche: ma Zorbàs non ne vuole più sapere di quelle imprese macedoni e cretesi. E, per non raccontare, racconta sommariamente le nefandezze cui ha prestato anche la sua mano. Crapoeuf est la huitante-troisième chanson du Cycle du Cahier ligné, constitué d'éléments tirés du Quaderno a Cancelli de Carlo Levi.
Ah, Lucien l'âne mon ami, je suis – comme toujours - très content de te voir... Georges Brassens, d'ailleurs, se plaisait à chanter un refrain qui n'était pas de lui ( mais de W.Heyman-J.Boyer) - et qui disait : « Avoir un bon copain / Voilà ce qu'il y a de meilleur au monde... » ( il n'y a d'ailleurs pas grand chose de plus dans cette savonnette)... Donc, fermons la parenthèse, et découvrons ensemble cette canzone que je viens de terminer et qui sort tout droit de la méditation du prisonnier. I manoscritti antichi che ci tramandano le opere di Rutebeuf sono quattordici: di questi, tre ci presentano raccolte più o meno complete, mentre gli altri riportano poemi isolati, in tutto tredici, e già presenti nei codici principali. Quasi tutti sono conservati a Parigi; altri due in Francia (Reims e Chantilly), uno in Belgio e uno a Manchester; disponiamo della riproduzione anche di un altro codice, conservato a Torino e distrutto in un incendio nel 1904. Il codice più importante è C (Parigi, Bibliothèque nationale de France 1635), trascritto nell'est della Francia alla fine del XIII secolo, e che contiene 49 poemi certi di Rutebeuf. Su esso si basa l'edizione di Zink. L'edizione Faral-Bastin, invece, si basa su A (Parigi, Bibliothèque nationale de France 837), piccardo e pure del XIII secolo, che contiene 33 poemi ed è l'unico a riportare per intero Il miracolo di Teofilo.

Come Follow the Drinking Gourd e Go down, Moses, una canzone dedicata alla cosiddetta “Underground Railroad”, la rete di cammini e case di accoglienza segrete che nella prima metà dell’800 consentì a decine di migliaia di schiavi afroamericani di mettersi in salvo negli Stati liberi del nord e nel Canada. La “regina” della “Ferrovia Sotteranea” fu Harriet Tubman, una schiava del Maryland che, dopo essere stata quasi uccisa dal proprio padrone bianco, fuggì e dedicò la vita a far fuggire altri schiavi. Sulla sua testa fu pure posta una taglia, ma non la presero mai. Morì quasi centenaria nel 1913.

Nel 1977 Eddie Carthan fu il primo afroamericano a diventare sindaco di Tchula, Mississippi.
A Tchula il 90% della popolazione era nera, ma la minoranza bianca imponeva da sempre la segregazione. Carthan non si fece intimidire dai “landlords” e dai loro sgherri del KKK e avviò un coraggioso ed avanzato piano di superamento della segregazione razziale e di miglioramento della qualità di vita della comunità nera. I bianchi gliela giurarono, e fin dal suo insediamento lo boicottarono e intimidirono, un vero linciaggio politico che si concluse nel 1981 con una falsa accusa di aggressione ad un poliziotto: Carthan fu costretto a dimettersi per sostenere il processo, dove fu condannato a tre anni di carcere. Per fortuna, dopo soli otto mesi, la pena fu revocata perché era evidente che si era trattato di un giudizio farsa e che Carthan era assolutamente estraneo ai fatti imputatigli.

Come All Clear in Harrisburg di Tom Paxton, una canzone dedicata all’incidente che accadde nel 1979 nella centrale nucleare di Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania, vicino ad Harrisburg.
Benchè sembra che non vi siano state conseguenze dannose per la salute dell’ambiente e dell’uomo, quell’incidente fu molto grave perché si determinò la fusione parziale del nocciolo del reattore (la cosiddetta “sindrome cinese”) con il rilascio di una quantità significativa di radiazioni. Si pensi che ancora oggi il reattore è blindato e sotto costante osservazione.
Se penso a Scajola, Berlusconi, Ratzinger e a tutti i nostrani nuclearisti da strapazzo, mi viene un incazzo…

Trovo questa canzone priva di attribuzione, come se fosse sua quindi, nel disco di Frank Schildt “Songs of Love, Play and Protest”, Folkways Records (1960).
Siccome però non mi pare che Schildt fosse un songwriter, credo che il brano debba continuare ad essere attribuito ad anonimo.

Canzone antimilitarista scritta presumibilmente nel 1920 dal musicista e compositore berlinese Stefan Wolpe (1902-1972), ebreo e comunista, che scampò all’Olocausto trasferendosi a New York nel 1938.
Ne trascrivo il testo così come dal libretto del disco.
Album “Songs of Love, Play and Protest”, Folkways Records.

Ma la mia attenzione è caduta sullo scandalo Lockeed... All'epoca (1977)avevo solo sette anni, rileggendo adesso mi rendo conto che nulla è cambiato e che questo resta sempre un Paese di Merda. Ho perso un altro pò di speranza, e già prima ne avevo poca...

Durante l’epoca coloniale, la costa atlantica del Nicaragua ed Honduras fu in gran parte soggetta al controllo dei britannici che vi costituirono un protettorato stringendo accordi di collaborazione, in funzione anti-spagnola, con i nativi miskito. Quando, sul finire del 1700, la Gran Bretagna rinunciò al controllo della regione, i miskito si scontrarono subito, e con successo, coi subentranti spagnoli e continuarono a mantenere il controllo sulle proprie terre, un’autonomia dichiarata e non riconosciuta che si accompagnò nei secoli successivi ad una loro sempre forte ostilità verso ogni governo centrale, che veniva percepito... The song expresses support for the people's struggle against the Israeli Apartheid Wall in Bil'in and Nil'in, on the West Bank in Palestine. People there are waging daily non-violent protests against the confiscation of their lands and their livelihood, while the armed forces of Israel respond with live ammunition and have injured and killed several people in this way.
