Probably the best known song to emerge from the Los Angeles office [of "People's Songs of California"] was Vern Partlow's Atomic Talking Blues or Old Man Atom. In 1958 Partlow recalled the song was inspired by a story assignment for The Los Angeles Daily News.
"I was assigned to interview various atomic scientists who visited the city to speak about the atom bomb ... I met with them and talked with them and I became a little alarmed, too. at what they were saying. And I agreed with them that something new had happened in the world -- something that would he with us a long time.
They said that if the atomic question were not settled amicably, the failure to do so might be heralded to the universe in the appearance of a bright new star. I think possibly they were right.

Breve accenno storico: Leo Szilard, fisico americano di origine ungherese, aveva previsto già nella seconda metà degli anni trenta il possibile futuro della fissione.
Insieme a Teller e Wigner, convinse nel 1939 il pacifico Einstein a scrivere una lettera al presidente Roosevelt, esponendo le potenzialità dell'uranio e suggerendo ogni sforzo per sviluppare l'arma atomica prima dei nazisti.
Il 6-12-41, esattamente il giorno prima dell'attacco a Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt autorizzò il gigantesco progetto Manhattan.
La pila di Chicago, costruita sotto lo stadio da football, era larga 9 metri, lunga 9,75 e alta 6,5: 1300 tonnellate tra metallo e ossido, di queste 46 erano di uranio. Alle 15,45 il fattore di moltiplicazione raggiunse il valore 1: era in corso una reazione autosostenuta.

"These three songs of peace were written for the World Assembly of Peace by the famous Turkish poet, Nazim Hikmet. They were set to music by Czech composers, and the music as well as literal translations of the Turkish original was sent to Paul Robeson and Howard Fast in New York.
"What follows are the texts which Howard Fast wrote to the Czech music, basing himself as nearly as possible within the musical framework upon Nazim Hikmet's original version. They will be recorded by Paul Robeson, whose voice will be heard in Helsinki by the men women of the world assembly."

As a result of that attack, 250 000 people alone have died. Three days later, on August the 9, Nagasaki suffered the same faith, a counting for another 60 000 deaths. We will never know how many people are now dying as a result of those attacks. It is estimated that fifty percent of the deaths in the two bombing resulted from burns. Anyone within half a mile from the blast stood little chance of survival, and those that did almost certainly would have died weeks later from radiation sickness. Long term radiation effects are equally terrifying: leukemia, genetic defects, retarded development, malignment deceases, shorten life span, death. Radioactive fallout is carried hundred of miles by the wind and is deposit into the soil by rain and snowfall. The number of deaths and tragedies as a result of nuclear bomb on the earth surface..."

Secondo quanto racconta Joana Lopes sul suo blog Entre las brumas de al memoria questa canzone risale con precisione alla fine del 1968 quando alla Messa di fine anno celebrata nella chiesa di S. Domingos a Lisbona il vescovo ricordò nella sua omelìa che quello era il giorno internazionalmente dedicato alla pace nel mondo… Non l’avesse mai fatto! Centinaia di astanti cominciarono a protestare, accusando il prelato e la Chiesa portoghese di essere una manica di ipocriti, conniventi con una feroce dittatura che con la pace del mondo non aveva niente a che fare e che proprio in quelle ore stava massacrando i popoli angolano e mozambicano e mandando al macello gli stessi giovani portoghesi. La celebrazione proseguì malamente disturbata e, al suo termine, la chiesa fu occupata per tutta la notte e i promotori... (continuer)

大阪の小学校で担任の先生(広島出身)から教わりました。若くて熱血漢な先生で原爆のことを語るときに流す涙を20年たった今も忘れることができません。。。今は広島の学校に赴任されてるとのこと。。。とても懐かしい。。。ここでこの悲しい曲に再会し改めて原爆の悲しさと先生への懐かしさが思い起こされました。。。有り難う御座いました。。。

私は今、中学3年生です。去年、広島へ修学旅行で行って、平和記念公園で、「木琴」を歌ってきました。「木琴」は、原爆にはあまり関係ありませんが、おなじ戦争の事をうたったものです。これを聴いていると、そのときの事が思い出されます。
感想とは関係ありませんが、私は、いま、自分のHPを作ろうとしています。そのなかに、広島へ行ったときの感想(??)というか、日記みたいなものがあります。そのページのBGMにぜひこの曲を使用したいです。
