In una fredda giornata di novembre del 1965, il trentunenne Norman Morrison, sposato, padre di tre bambini, un giovane di fede quacchera e convinto pacifista, lasciò la sua casa di Baltimora con la sua figlioletta Emily e raggiunse in auto Washington, DC. Una volta lì, appena la sera scese sulla capitale, guidò fin nei pressi del Pentagono, il quartier generale del Ministero della Difesa statunitense, dove si cosparse di kerosene e, acceso un fiammifero sulla suola di una scarpa, si diede fuoco.
Non è chiaro se avesse affidato Emily a qualcuno lì intorno o se l’avesse sistemata a sedere a distanza di sicurezza...
Mentre Norman bruciava vivo, il Segretario della Difesa Robert McNamara inorridì, avendo assistito alla scena dalla finestra del suo ufficio, poco distante. E vide quando le guardie si precipitarono cercando di spegnere il rogo, alcune bruciandosi nel tentativo…

“His name resounds across the oceans”, e fu proprio così.
Pochi giorni dopo la morte di Norman Morrison, dall’altra parte del mondo, e proprio in quel Vietnam martoriato, un poeta onorò in versi il suo sacrificio contro quella guerra, contro tutte le guerre. Si trattava di Tố Hữu (1920-2002), forse il più importante poeta rivoluzionario vietnamita:

Pochi giorni dopo la morte di Norman Morrison, dall’altra parte del mondo, e proprio in quel Vietnam martoriato, un poeta onorò in versi il suo sacrificio contro quella guerra, contro tutte le guerre. Si trattava di Tố Hữu (1920-2002), forse il più importante poeta rivoluzionario vietnamita:

Home Movies
[ENG] An anti-war song with a more "humanistic" approach,
describing the conflict as seen through the eyes of a fictional father/soldier caught in a seemingly never-ending war, who sees his son grow up only thorough the "home movies" he gets from his family.
Initially set in a kind of SF scenario, it gradually
incorporated elements from the Iraq war (broken promises of troops withdrawal from presidents, sexual assaults on women soldiers at the hands of their own "colleagues", etc)
[ITA] Una canzone pacifista con un approccio quasi "romantico", nel descrivere la situazione di un padre al fronte di un conflitto interminabile, che vede crescere suo figlio solo attraverso i filmini (home movies) che riceve da casa.
Inizialmente ambientata in uno scenario fantascientifico, la canzone è mutata, incorporando parecchi elementi caratteristici della guerra in Iraq e toni di invettiva contro la politica estera US.

This song, released in 2016, is dedicated to the memory of Norman Morrison and his act of self-immolation, performed below Secretary of Defense McNamara's Pentagon Office, in protest against the Vietnam War and devastating impacts on the Vietnamese people.
The "17 words" refer to the brief letter he sent, hours before the fact, to his wife Anne, explaining his decision. The chorus remembers the conflicting reaction to his extreme act, while the second part of the song recalls the consequences it had on his family and how he achieved "hero status" in Vietnam.
Questa canzone, pubblicata nel 2016, è ispirata al sacrificio di Norman Morrison, che si immolò il 2 novembre del '65 sotto gli occhi del segretario della difesa americano McNamara, in segno di protesta contro la Guerra del Vietnam e, in particolar modo, le sue tragiche conseguenze per il popolo vietnamita.
