“They gave a war and nobody came” è una canzone sicuramente ispirata a The Monkees dal seguente passo di “The People, Yes”, poema scritto da Carl Sandburg nel 1936:

The little girl saw her first troop parade and asked, “What are those?”
“Soldiers.”
“What are soldiers?”
“They are for war. They fight and each tries to kill as many of the other side as he can.”
The girl held still and studied.
“Do you know…I know something?”
“Yes, what is it you know?”
“Sometime they’ll give a war and nobody will come.”

O forse Bill Chadwick e John Chadwick non sapevano nemmeno di citare il grande Sandburg, perché nel 1968, anno di uscita dell’album “The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees”, il concetto chiave del passo che ho riportato era già diventato da tempo uno slogan del movimento che si batteva contro la guerra in Vietnam.
