If you talk to miners they all say that what they miss about mining is the craic. This has been recorded by the group 'Pegleg Ferret'. I heard it sung the other night by the Newcastle fiddler Tom McConville and he did it brilliantly.” (Ed Pickford)
Ennesima canzone di miniera, ma questa dotata di una prospettiva originale: protagonista del canto è infatti il Carbone, per secoli (fin dal 13°!) benedizione e dannazione dei lavoratori inglesi…

This song has been recorded by a lot of people now - The Battlefield Band, AlistairRussell - who gave me permission to use his version on my website - the great Bob Davenport and a high energy Durham group called Whiskey Priests.” (Ed Pickford)
Deve essere un sentimento di profonda rabbia e dolore quello che gente come Ed Pickford conosce bene: i minatori del Durham, così come quelli di tante altre regioni della Gran Bretagna, sono stati sfruttati a lungo, sono morti a centinaia per incidenti e malattie contratte nelle miniere, hanno lottato duramente per il miglioramento delle condizioni di lavoro e poi… E poi il nulla, semplicemente nel Durham non c’è più una sola miniera delle centinaia che esistevano quando Ed Pickford era bambino.

Mother Jones, (1837-1930) born Mary Harris in Cork, co-founded the IWW; Knights of Labor and United Mine Workers, 1871; Organised the Children’s Crusade of 1903; children/husband die of Yellow Fever, Memphis; Business lost, Chicago Fire 1871; Co founded the Socialist Party of Am., 1901.

Mary G. Harris Jones (1837 (baptized) – November 30, 1930), known as Mother Jones from 1897 onwards, was an Irish-born American schoolteacher and dressmaker who became a prominent union organizer, community organizer, and activist. She helped coordinate major strikes and co-founded the Industrial Workers of the World.
After Jones' husband and four children all died of yellow fever in 1867, and her dress shop was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, she became an organizer for the Knights of Labor and the United Mine Workers... (Continues)
