C'erano soldati che marciavano sul suolo pubblico, oggi,
E stasera ce n'erano ancora
Camminavano su e giù come uccelli marini a terra
Prima che si addensino le nuvole di burrasca
Devo comprare ogni tipo di scatolette che restano sugli scaffali
Stanno provando le sirene di allarme aereo
Hanno riempito le banche del sangue e svuotato i letti
All'ospedale e al manicomio
Oggi ho visto uno che costruiva un rifugio in giardino
Mentre ce ne stavamo lì pigramente a chiacchierare,
Diceva, “No, no, non credo che ci sarà la guerra”,
Però seguitava a scavare.
Tutto quel che amo nella mia vita
Potrebbe essere spazzato via senza avvisaglia
Eppure gli uccelli cantano ancora, e le campane della chiesa suonano,
E il sole è sorto stamattina.
