We shall not, we shall not be moved
We shall not, we shall not be moved

We'll building a mighty union,
We shall not be moved
We shall not, we shall not be moved
We shall not, we shall not be moved
Black and white together,
We shall not be moved
We shall not, we shall not be moved
We shall not, we shall not be moved

The version of the hymn as performed by the Wildwood Boys at the Tangen, Palo Alto, February 23rd 1963. It still keeps the appearance of a religious hymn, though in the context of the Civil Rights Movement. Lyrics are reproduced from this page

NO NOS MOVERÁN
sube a nacer conmigo, hermano
no volverá tu voz endurecida
no volverán tus ojos taladrados
acudid a mis venas y a mi boca
hablad por mis palabras y mi sangre
---

Versione di Barbara Dane dall’album “F.T.A.! Songs et the GI Resistance”, Paredon Records 1970.
Sung by Barbara Dane with active-duty GIs.
Recorded at Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Edited by Irwin Silber.
“I learned this song as a young activist in Detroit, while we tried to help the auto workers win their strikes for higher wages and less speed-ups. Over 25 years of singing for people in movement, I've collected more verses than I could sing at one time. I sing as many as I do, varying on every occasion, as a way of restoring some of our history that hes been stolen from us. I believe in history, and the power of it to teach us and give us strength to face what's up ahead. I know that the system believes in it too, otherwise why has it gone to so much trouble to leave out the slave rebellions, the strikes which won tremendous economic gains and protection for working people, campaigns for women's right to vote, the antimonopoly struggles of the midwestern farmers of the 1880s and '90s, and the character of genuine national liberation which infused the battles which Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, etc., waged to free themselves from Spain into which the U.S. government later introduced its cultural, economic and even military subversion? Yes, Vietnam is not the first time our powerful oligarchy has intervened in the internal struggles of other countries. But as we learn about that, we also learn who has benefited in reality. And those who have done the fighting and dying, without reaping the benefits, are beginning to realize they are brothers with the ARVN [l’esercito sud-vietnamita, ndr] veterans who today are fighting in the streets of Saigon to get housing, food, and simple rights from the corrupt regime they served out of ignorance.
And they shall not be moved.”

WE SHALL NOT BE MOVED
We shall not, we shall not be moved.
We shall not, we shall not be moved.
Just like a tree that's planted by the water,
We shall not be moved!
We're not afraid of gun thugs!
The union is behind us!
Henry Ford's a bastard, he should be removed!
Henry Ford's a bastard, he should be removed!
Just like the garbage standing in the alley,
He should be removed!
We're walking for our freedom!
We don’t want Polaris!
Basi nucleari, rispondiamo no!
Per gli Americani, rispondiamo no!
Rispondiamo no!
Viva Pancho Villa!
We shall not be moved!
Viva Che Guevara!
We shall not be moved!
Free Huey Newton!
We are the conspiracy!
Your jail walls cannot hold us!
We are the people!
We're comin’ on to victory!
We shall not, we shall not be moved.
We shall not, we shall not be moved.
Just like a tree that's planted by the water,
We shall not be moved!
We're not afraid of gun thugs!
The union is behind us!

No, no, non ci muoveremo mai! No, no non ci muoveremo mai!
Come una quercia nata lungo il fiume noi resteremo qui
Uniti nella lotta, resteremo qui

Avvertenza. Come canzone integrante e basilare del Civil Rights Movement, We Shall Not Be Moved è stata inserita nel percorso "Razzismo e schiavitù negli Stati Uniti d'America".
Notice.. As a song being a basic and integral part of the Civil Rights Movement, "We Shall Not Be Moved" has been included in the song itinerary "Racism and Slavery in the United States of America". Its inclusion in the other song itinerary "Emigration and Labor War" is due to its use as an acknowledged labor song. [AWS/CCG Staff]
The author of this song is labeled as 'anonymous' as it is a religious hymn and we don't simply know if it has a definite author. Its adaptation began in the 30's as a labor song; its original title, I Shall Not Be Moved was then turned into the 1st person of plural. However, it is sure -as in the case of We Shall Overcome- that the hymn was revised and revived in the Highlander Folk School (Tennessee) by Miles and Zilphia Horton, thus becoming one of the basic songs of the Civil Rights Movement; also Pete Seeger used to perform his own version of the song. The first, historical public performance of the song in the sphere of CRM was by the Wildwood Boys at the Tangent in Palo Alto on February 23rd, 1963; curiously enough, although the refrain said clearly "We shall not be moved", the band kept the original "I" title in their recording. It should be noted that the first recording of the song traces back to 1951, in the album Get On Board by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. But, as a matter of fact, the song has been used in every protest circumstance in the US and abroad, becoming one of the very symbols of protest song. For its simple and impressive slogan and for its capacity to be adapted to any situation the song has countless versions, including those sung in stadiums by soccer supporters. [AWS/CCG Staff]
