Me and my daddy when I was just a boy,
Spent so many hours talking about the great World War,
I just couldn't wait until I was full grown,
To go up and wear a uniform.
I can still remember the day I went away ,
How the home crowds cheered and the flags and banners waved.
When I got up and climbed aboard the plane,
I didn't know that things would never be the same.
Well, I come home from the war to a war at home ,
And I can't help but wonder what it was I’ve done .
Seemed like I went off to fight the enemy,
Now I’m back home and the enemy is me.
I said ,I'm back home, and the enemy is me.
It didn't take long before I began to tell,
The real thing can be a living hell.
I saw so many lose their bodies and their minds,
In the jungles and blood of Vietnam .
I kept on fighting and the Lord spared my life .
I lost part of my body but I never lost my mind .
But the home folks seemed to sicken at the sight,
Of a Vietnam veteran still alive.
I come home from a war to a war at home,
And I can't help but wonder what it was I’ve done .
Seemed like I went off to fight the enemy,
Now I’m back home and the enemy is me.
Said, I'm back home and the enemy is me.
Please Mr President don't you think it's time,
To give a little thanks to the boys from Vietnam ?
Just a little something to ease all the pain ,
And welcome them back home again .
So listen old son, if you'd like to go and fight,
Just make sure you know what it‘s wrong and right.
The fashion of today could be tomorrow's shame,
And the folks at home just have you to blame.
Well,I come home from a war to a war at home,
And I can't help but wonder what it was I’ve done .
Seemed like I went off to fight the enemy,
I’m back home and the enemy is me.
