Genesis and Genocide

Tony Smith
Language: English

Lawyers might argue but you can make up your mind
If Israel’s war should be called ‘genocide’

God of old said that Sodom must go
Men did unspeakable acts there and so
He warned Abraham the city would fall
Lightning would kill them sinners and all
Abraham asked God what he would do
If fifty good people should live there too
So God agreed He would spare the town
He could not put the innocent down

Lawyers might argue but you can make up your mind
If Israel’s war should be called ‘genocide’

As Gomorrah also incurred God’s ire
Abraham asked would it perish in fire
But if twenty good folk did there abide
Would their deaths sate His desire?
Then he lowered the numbers to ten
And God in response unequivocally said
To punish the innocent the guilty beside
Was cruel, unjust and could never be right

Lawyers might argue but you can make up your mind
If Israel’s war should be called ‘genocide’

Does Israel think God’s on its side
When so many innocent children have died
They make fine speeches about accidents
But ten thousand is too many of them
And they say Hamas they must fight
In schools and hospitals where they hide
And in the camps sheltering refugees
Though Israel promised them sanctuary

Lawyers might argue but you can make up your mind
If Israel’s war should be called ‘genocide’

Israel destroyed the poor people’s homes
With missiles and the rubble bulldozed
Vengeance is mine said the Hebrew God
Judge not or be judged said his Son
The death toll is written there on Hell’s Gate
And war over borders spreads further the hate
Is a new term needed to describe Palestine
As only the bravest dare say ‘genocide’?

Lawyers might argue but you can make up your mind
If Israel’s war should be called ‘genocide’
Lawyers might argue but I have made up my mind
Israel’s war should be called genocide
