Il 2 maggio 1945 il LVI. Panzerkorps della Wehrmacht, parte della guarnigione a difesa di Berlino, chiese un armistizio via radio al 28° Corpo fucilieri [28-й гвардейский стрелковый корпус] delle guardie dell'8^ Armata [8-я гвардейская общевойсковая армия] sovietica. Erano le 00:40. In quella mattina il comandante del 56° Corpo, generale Helmuth Weidling, firmò l’ordine di resa, diramato a tutti i soldati della guarnigione di Berlino. L’8 maggio 1945 la resa incondizionata di tutte le forze tedesche fu firmata nel quartiere di Karlshorst.
Nella battaglia di Berlino i tedeschi soffrirono oltre 90mila morti e 220mila feriti, i sovietici oltre 81mila morti e 280mila feriti.
