You were a child of that magic world
All around you the sound of life had swirled
You watched in horror as they laid it to waste
Felt in your heart the threat the forest faced
Chico, the bullets that took your life away
Were aimed at you by men cold and mean
No ordinary rains fell on the trees that day
Tropical skies wept tears of green
Forests that beheld the dawn of man
The greed of money could not withstand
You saw your home turn barren and brown
Heard the piercing shrieks as the trees came down
Green giants reach out from the canopy
Stand and salute your legacy
The battle you fought is far from won
The Amazon still burns in the setting sun
All around you the sound of life had swirled
You watched in horror as they laid it to waste
Felt in your heart the threat the forest faced
Chico, the bullets that took your life away
Were aimed at you by men cold and mean
No ordinary rains fell on the trees that day
Tropical skies wept tears of green
Forests that beheld the dawn of man
The greed of money could not withstand
You saw your home turn barren and brown
Heard the piercing shrieks as the trees came down
Green giants reach out from the canopy
Stand and salute your legacy
The battle you fought is far from won
The Amazon still burns in the setting sun

Chico Mendes
I can remember vividly the news that Chico Mendes had been shot dead in the Amazon, his home on22 December 1988
He had been invited to speak at the U.N. in New York about his battle to prerserve the Amazon rainforest and defend the indigenous peoples' human rights. For those motivated by greed abd hate it was too much.
