Nizar Qabbani, a prominent Syrian poet, said:

When Fairouz sings, mountains and rivers follow her voice, the mosque and the church, the oil jars and loaves of bread. Through her, every one of us is made to blossom, and once we were no more than sand; men drop their weapons and apologize. Upon hearing her voice, our childhood is molded anew

TELL ME, TELL ME ABOUT MY COUNTRY, TELL ME

Tell me, tell me about my country tell me,
O breeze passing by the tree facing me
tell me story about my family, a story about my house
tell me a long story about my childhood neighbor
Tell me, tell me

O breeze passing on the land of laurel
Please (in God's Name) come and play in the backyard of my house
O breeze passing on the land of laurel
Please (in God's Name) come and play in the backyard of my house
Tell me is he still remembers me
in my country and if he still waits to spend the night with me
Tell me is he still remembers me
in my country and if he still waits to spend the night with me
in those limited hours of happiness please tell me my beloved

tell me story about my family, a story about my house
tell me a long story about my childhood neighbor
Tell me, tell me

Please (in God's Name) tell me how is the olive
And the boy and girl hiding behind the mill
Please (in God's Name) tell me how is the olive
And the boy and girl hiding behind the mill
tell me how is the olive
And the boy and girl hiding behind the mill

And the trees and the Earth, and our sky?
these are our country and our love
And the trees and the Earth, and our sky?
these are our country and our love
the blossom of those cheap days, please my beloved tell me

Tell me, tell me about my country, tell me.
Oh breeze, passing over the trees before me,
Tell me story about my family, a story about my house.
Tell me a long story about my childhood neighbor.

racconta, racconta

raccontami come sta l'ulivo
