Ahed Tamimi

Cavalry

Cavalry is the lead single from The Beirut School, the new compilation celebrating ten years of trailblazing Lebanese indie band Mashrou’ Leila.

The accompanying video is the band’s second collaboration with director Jessy Moussallem, following her award-winning film for Roman.

The video revolves around the devastating cruelty and machismo of militarized oppression, which enters our homes, and plays out in our domestic life.

Calling to mind Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian teenager arrested outside her home for confronting Israeli soldiers, and thrown into the public gaze as an activist, the children in the film reflect Mashrou’ Leila’s own struggles with political power, having recently been banned from being with their audiences in Jordan and Egypt, and finding themselves at the center of yet another human rights polemic.

The film reminds us perhaps of the energized idealism we had as youths coming into the world, and believing we could change it, before political fatigue left us jaded and defeated.

CAVALRY

Don't you dare to flaunt your thrones
Tyranny blooms disobedience
If I am to die a hundred times
I will come back a hundred times
With my sword, polished*
Gathering an army that looks like me
We cling to each other and disobey

Your army and its highness
Won't beat me
You can't beat my heart
You won't beat me

At the bottom of every height** lays my soil
I sprout polished pens***
The carriers of the mountains
Started with gravel until they've reached accomplishments
Where power is built by oppression
Every raising voice is considered an attack

Your army and its highness
Won't beat me
You can't beat my heart
You won't beat me

Your army is redemption to my heart
You won't break me
Your army is redemption to my heart
You won't break me

You have your values
But love is ours
You have your customs
But music is ours
You have your traditions
But the future is ours
You have your values
But love is ours
* a metaphor for being invincible.
** a hurdle.
*** It might suggest that those heights (hurdles) led him to start writing
