For Anja, è infatti un omaggio alle vittime dell'Olocausto, in particolare a coloro che pur essendo sopravvissuti allo sterminio sono stati schiacciati dal peso delle atrocità di cui sono stati testimoni, e forse dal peso di una colpa oscura, quella di essere usciti vivi da uno dei più grandi massacri della storia. For Anja trae ispirazione dal fumetto di Art Spiegelman, Maus, che nella leggerezza dello stile fumettistico riesce ad esprimere l'enormità della tragedia dell'Olocausto.
In questa storia si muove in sordina la figura di Anja Spiegelman (Andzia Zylberberg), madre dell'autore, una donna fragile, comune, certamente non un'eroina, che malgrado la sua fragilità riesce tuttavia a sopravvivere all'internamento nel campo di Auschwitz.
Nel 1968 si toglierà la vita, compiendo una scelta difficile da comprendere eppure condivisa con molti altri che come lei erano scampati allo sterminio.
