Early in the century and early in the year
The poor Iraqi people lived in mortal fear
Under a dictator they’d borne years of pain
Now the U.S.A. was after him, they’d suffer once again
Australia joined the posse we moseyed right along (ee-yah)
Though the better part of us knew the war was wrong
Some wrote protest letters, or took it to the street
While just a few, a special few acted their beliefs

(They were ...)
Human shields, human shields
They put their bodies on the line
Human shields, human shields
So the children would not die
Human shields, human shields
Long live their noble cause
If more of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars

A woman came from Newcastle, Donna was her name
She knew all the tricks they played in the political game
Knew when Bush was lying, Blair and Howard too
The truth died a little bit more, each time their lips did move
She heard them argue Iraq was such a threat
That we had to give them liberty or death
When sacrifice is mentioned by generals in armchairs
You know the loss is always yours - and never, ever theirs

(She joined the ...)
Human shields, human shields
And put her body on the line
Human shields, human shields
So the children would not die
Human shields, human shields
Long live their noble cause
If more of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars

Donna found Iraqi kids just like yours and mine
With music in their laughter and sunlight in their smiles
They touched her heart forever and even through their fear
She knew they would not blame her when missiles rent the air
She suffered anxiety and trembled like the kids
Shared the parents’ anguish around the hospital beds
Made herself a hostage beside a water tank
Her body was shaken violently but her spirit never sank

(She was a ...)
Human shield, human shield
She put her body on the line
Human shield, human shield
So the children would not die
Human shield, human shield
Long live her noble cause
If more of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars

When the dust had settled and the lynch mobs had their way
Men appeared with carpet bags to collect their pay
Donna fought her trauma by raising funds to aid
Places for the orphans our bloody war had made
When distant politicians vote that kids must die
Mouthing words like ‘practical’ they know it is a lie
When jingoistic hypocrites pour out their bile and hate
Underneath the bombs at least your self-respect is safe

(With the ...)
Human shields, human shields
They put their bodies on the line
Human shields, human shields
So the children would not die
Human shields, human shields
Long live their noble cause
If more of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars

The list of wars to end all wars is very, very long
Every time an Aussie dies we say that war is wrong
But every time a medal is pinned on someone’s chest
We think that maybe might is right and want to be the best
In this age of nuclear arms and deadly unmanned drones
We think just like the cavemen who fought with sticks and stones
But if upon this planet we intend to stay
We really must abandon war and think some other way

(Like the ...)
Human shields, human shields
They put their bodies on the line
Human shields, human shields
So the children would not die
Human shields, human shields
Long live their noble cause
If more of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars
A hundred thousand human shields
Would put an end to wars
If all of us were human shields
We’d put an end to wars
