Colin Meloy, leader del gruppo, ha raccontato a Pitchfork di aver scritto questa canzone dopo la lettura del racconto "Hunger" della scrittrice statunitense Elise Blackwell, uscito nel 2003, sugli eventi drammatici accaduti durante l'assedio di Leningrado da parte delle truppe naziste (durò dal 8 settembre 1941 al 18 gennaio 1944 - accidenti! mica sapevo che era stato così lungo!... )
Tra gli altri episodi, la Blackwell racconta quello di alcuni botanici che durante l'assedio, nonostante la fame che li consumava, protessero dalla gente e da loro stessi le piante dell'istituto...
