Five Hundred Miles

Una delle canzoni più ascoltate e richieste fra i soldati americani durante la guerra in Vietnam, insieme Leaving On A Jet Plane, Run Through The Jungle, Bad Moon Rising, "Paint It Black”, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, “Puff the Magic Dragon” e “Spooky" (in Vietnam questi due ultimi titoli servirono a designare il famigerato aereo da trasporto e combattimento Douglas AC-47), ecc.
Interpretata anche dal Kingston Trio e riproposta nel 1963 con un testo diverso dal country singer e songwriter Bobby Bare.
If you miss the train I'm on,
You will know that I am gone,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
you can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Lord, I'm one, Lord, I'm two, Lord,
I'm three, Lord, I'm four, Lord,
I'm five hundred miles a way from home.
Away from home, away from home,
Away from home, away from home,
Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home.

Not a shirt on my back,
Not a penny to my name.
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way.
This-a way, this-a way,
This-a way, this-a way,
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way.

If you miss the train I'm on,
You will know that I am gone,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

Versione di Bobby Bare, 1963.
FIVE HUNDRED MILES AWAY FROM HOME

I'm five hundred miles away from home

Teardrops fell on mama's note
When I read the things she wrote
She said "We miss you, son. We love you, come on home."
Well I didn't have to pack
I had it all right on my back
Now I'm five hundred miles away from home

Away from home away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

(spoken) I know this is the same road I took the day I left home.
But it sure looks different now.
Well I guess I look different, too cause time changes everything.
I wonder what they'll say when they see their boy looking this way?

Oh I wonder what they'll say when I get home
Can't remember when I ate
It's just thumb and walk and wait
And I'm still five hundred miles away from home
If my luck had been just right
I'd be with them all tonight
But I'm still five hundred miles away from home

Away from home away from home
Cold and tired and all alone
Yes I'm five hundred miles away from home

Oh, I'm still 500 miles away from home.
