Lyrics and music by John Denver
Testo e musica di John Denver

Peter, Paul and Mary.
Peter, Paul and Mary.

"Not only was war music prevalent at home it also had a large effect in Vietnam; the soldiers had their own top forty. Many of the songs they listened to had no war theme, some where about the war, and some of the songs they listened to were not meant to be about the war but the soldiers put their own connotations into the song. For example Peter Paul and Mary’s remake of "Jet Plane" originally by John Denver, was a song about going home. The soldiers would listen to this song and imagine leaving on a Jet Plane back to their homes and families."

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin', its early morn
The taxi's waiting, he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry.

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I think of you
Every song I sing, I sing for you
When I come back, I'll wear your wedding ring.

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Then close your eyes, I'll be on my way.
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say,

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
I'm leavin' on a jet plane
I Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Baciami e sorridi per me
Oh, ragazza, detesto dover andare

Così tante volte ti ho deluso
Cosi tante volte ho fatto lo stupido
Te lo dico ora, non contano nulla
Ovunque vada ti penserò
Qualsiasi canzone la canterò per te
Quando tornerò, porterò la tua fede

Baciami e sorridi per me
Oh, ragazza, detesto dover andare

Baciami e sorridi per me
Oh, ragazza, detesto dover andare

I'm not exactly sure that the lyrics to "Leaving on Jet Plane" trigger memories of leaving Vietnam "on a jet plane"...more likely, the lyrics invoke memories of leaving "The World" "on a jet plane" to go TO Vietnam.

Thus the words: "I don't know when I'll be back again"..."When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring"..."Oh, babe, I hate to go" (why would anyone "hate to go" FROM Vietnam)?

The song was repurposed with a new meaning that belied the literal lyrics. We looked forward to the "leaving on a jet plane" and the rest of the words were either ignored or reimagined to fit into the "going home" theme. We arrived and departed on civilian chartered commercial airliners flown by the contractor World Airways. The dream was the moment the plane taking us home would lift off the runway, which would be the gateway moment back to reality. Everything was surreal until then. You had to be there.

With all the conversations and talk about other women, has anyone thougt about the song as a man who is dying?
He he leaving on a jet plane, and when he retunes he will be waring the ring.
I may be off base. I am.just throwing in a possible alternative.

I heard that Leaving on a Jet Plane is about a flight attendant (AKA stewardess). Flight Attendants were not allowed to be married in the 50s and 60s. The flight attendants who did marry did so secretly and would remove their wedding ring when they went to work so they wouldn't be terminated.

I can relate I left on a jet plane out of Travis AFB to Vietnam. And can relate to that song, every time I hear that song it stirs my emotions and memories.

If you want to relate this song to the wartime experience, it seems much more fitting as the words of a soldier to his sweetheart at the time of his departure for the front: "don't know when I'll be back again..." not his return home.

I was an instructor during vietnam, also did funeral details. Took a 17 year old to the airport with his parents Friday P.M., got the telegram Monday A.M.(rocketed while landing) I "crashed" 30 years later. Still picking up the pieces.
