The daughter of a self-employed logger, Helen DeBaker was born in Escanaba, Michigan, where she became interested in music at an early age. With her father playing the harmonica, and her mother playing guitar, piano and accordion, it is only natural that Helen DeBaker would develop an interest in music, and specifically country music. And, in addition to being interested in the music itself, Helen also began singing, becoming an accomplished singer, as well as an exceptional songwriter at an early age.
Playing the guitar before she was 12 years old, and singing at church as well as other public gatherings and events along with her mother, Helen's talent in the field of music blossomed quickly. It wasn't long before Helen was singing lead while her mother harmonized and played along. As an adult Helen continued indulging her musical interest as a singer and songwriter, and was soon entertaining in local clubs as a solo act. A few years later she joined her first band, The Country Squires which featured among others one of Helens high school teachers on drums. After a few years Helen left The Country Squires and joined a band named The Stardusters. Though she now is a member of a band called The Delta Drifters, she still regularly performs with The Stardusters.
Helen DeBaker has competed in many country music contests, and has placed 1st and 2nd on several occasions. Being a talented singer, songwriter and picker, Helen is much sought after in her area. She has performed at outdoor concerts, rodeos, fairs and weddings, as well as performing many gigs at local clubs and taverns. She has performed with the Moe Bandy Band and has opened for people like Earl Thomas Conley and Ricky Van Shelton. She has also rubbed elbows with country music legends like Jim Ed Brown and Ernest Tubb. In addition she recently had a gig before 11,000 people including president George Bush. And to top it off Helen has done something that every country music performer dreams of, performing on stage at The Grand Ole Opry.
We are proud to announce that Helen DeBaker has recently signed with our own independent label, Wunder Sound Productions, as well as signing with our subsidiary music publishing company, Wunder Sound Publishing.
Anything worth having is worth waiting for, and Helen has finally taken the next big step in her country music career. With faith in God, hope and the will to never give up on her dreams, Helen DeBaker has paid her dues, put in her time, and is proud to announce the release of her first album, "My Music", on the Wunder Sound Productions label. With a sound that is reminiscent of the great Dottie West, Helen is thrilled to say this is "My Music".
