Tina ArenaTina Arena Biography

BRIEF HISTORY SO FAR.

en français

For some, the continued ascent of Tina Arena’s latest album Un Autre Unives in the French charts is miraculous. And to be fair, there are very few 37 y.o. new mothers up there alongside her, but for Tina it comes across as just the continuation of a career now in its third decade. “There’s not a lot to say really” said Tina, “It’s fantastic to be able to do what I do for a living and I appreciate every moment but at the same time… singing is what I’ve always done. It’s hard to imagine doing anything else!.”

Perhaps Tina underestimates the ability with which she exhibits her stuff. As a seasoned professional she has graced more stages than most and toured every continent, some, many times over. But Tina’s recent career turn-around is undoubtedly down to more than just luck. “ It’s the result of hard work” she says, “and it was a very thought-out process. I spent the last half of 2004 back in Australia touring, I had written a lot of songs but there was this growing gap between albums. It wasn’t until I settled back into Europe and signed a new deal that I was able to focus my attention on making a new French record. It was a concept that I hadn’t really considered until then - but I don’t regret it.”

Indeed the phenomenal success of Aimer Jusqu’a l’Impossible is simple testimony. Released in Nov 2005, ( in the week her son Gabriel was born) the track made a stunning debut at #3 and stayed in the French Top 10 for sixteen weeks. According to music industry sources, it has been one of the most played tracks in Europe and is still on rotation at most major radio station across France, Belgium, Switzerland, the Middle East and more recently Canada.

The second single Je m’appelle Bagdad seems due to follow a similar curve. Despite the staggered start of its commercial release, Bagdad’ debuted at #6 in France 05.06.06 and has held a Top 10 spot since with similar airplay results thus far. A sure sign to any who may have thought that Tina’s reestablishment was going to be temporary.

“I don’t look at it as a comeback” Tina laughs “ it’s more of a ‘come on!’ ”

Tina’s love affair with France started in the late 90’s. A duet with Mark Anthony, I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You, was the lead track from the film The Mask of Zorro and its success as a single in France established her as an international artist with broad appeal. Her subsequent French single Aller Plus Haut sold over 1 mill. copies and so a new ‘French’ career begun.

The next two releases Just Me and Vous etes Tourjours La combined a mixture of English and French tracks but Un Autre Univers is Tina’s first ‘repertoire Francais’ album.

“Initially it was difficult for me to get my head around French pronunciation, it’s not an easy language to sing in, but with all of the work I’ve done lately it’s coming together much more naturally.” referring to her recent rehearsal studio lock-out with a new French band. Indeed, even Tina’s induction into motherhood has barely slowed her performance schedule down. Having already toured France and Belgium once this year, Tina launched into several months of live performances, beginning with two sold out nights at Theatre de la Port St. Martin in Paris on the 13th and 14th June. On the 18th June she will perform the recently released Kane Alexander duet Timeless at the Prince Regent Theatre in Munich. Australian audiences will be able to tune into a live broadcast on Ch9 from 8.30pm EST.
