Lyricist Edward Madden was born in New York City on July 17, 1878.
Growing up in New York, he attended public schools and graduated from Fordham University. He started writing special material for singers including Fanny Brice for various vaudeville acts and eventually moved on to the Broadway stage.
Collaborating with composers such as Ben Jerome, Dorothy Jardon (his wife), Joseph Daly, Gus Edwards, Julian Edwards, Louis Hirsch, Theodore Morse, Percy Wenrich and Jerome Kern, Madden produced such classic standards as “By the Light of the Silvery Moon”, “Moonlight Bay”, “Down in Jungle Town”, “Blue Bell”, “Look Out for Jimmy Valentine”, “Aren’t You the Wise Ole Owl”, “My Only One”, “What Could Be Sweeter?”, “The World Can’t Go ‘Round Without You”, “Red Rose Rag”, “Silver Bell”, “Arra Wanna”, “I’ve Got a Feelin’ for You”, “A Little Boy Called Taps”, “I’d Rather Be a Lobster Than a Wise Guy”.
His work on Broadway produced the scores for Rogers Brothers in Panama, The Mimic World, The Girl and the Wizard, He Came from Milwaukee, La Belle Paree and Little Boy Blue.
Maddens songs have also been included in several hit films of the 1930’s, 40s’s and 50’s including Turn Back the Clock, Babes in Arms, Tin Pan Alley, Bullets for O’Hara, Birth of the Blues, Ship Ahoy, On Moonlight and By the Light of the Silvery Moon.
Edward Madden, a charter member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), died in Hollywood California on March 11, 1952.
