Location: San Diego, CA - USA
Singer / songwriter Samantha Murphy has been in the music industry her entire life. Born in Hawaii (her Mother's Australian, Father's New Zealand), Samantha grew up on the road singing in her family's band, The Murphys. The family toured the United States from the time Samantha could walk, opening for artists such as Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. She wrote her first song when she was eight and performed it on stage that same night, somewhere in Ohio. She hasn't stopped since.
"…great voice and tunes to match."
-Ron Sexsmith
While most kids were learning how to read and write, Samantha was experiencing life on a tour bus, hanging out with circus people and musicians. About her early experience with the "business" side of show, Samantha says "My older sister and I would sell our albums off the stage after the show. They were $8.00 then. When I was nine years old, I asked my dad what our ‘cut' was and where my share of the profits was going. From then on, I got $1.00 for every album we sold."
"Totally awesome!!! Move over Ms. Crow...someone new is taking the stage! With the essence of Brickells' lyrical talent and hooks reminiscent of Carole King; Samantha Murphy's songs draw you in, calling to your soul...best I've heard of a demo CD ..EVER." - Barb Hill - Feminine Groove
Samantha has worked with artists such as Five for Fighting and Crowded House. She has appeared on television shows ranging from "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to Australian shows such as "Hey, Hey It's Saturday," and "The Steve Vizard Show."
About her music, Sam says, "Most artists say that music is an outlet and an expression of their feelings. For me, music is my feelings. I'm as one with it as I am my skin. It's all I've ever known. To write music that touches people is to diminish my own sense of aloneness."
"There is no barrier to a rising star on the horizon & Samantha Murphy exhibits intrinsic characteristics that are blinding in their potential to shine onwards to the meridian." -United Global Artists
Music has taken Samantha from Australia, where she toured with Kylie Minogue; to London, where she lived and performed for over a year; to Nashville, where she lived and recorded music in former slave quarters; to Los Angeles' Warner / Chappell Music, where she spent four years as a staff songwriter; to New York City, where she partially recorded her CD.
Transcript from an Interview with Samantha Murphy
...I've been performing professionally since I was 6 years old.
Yes but why this name?
I was born with it. Didn't have to think too hard about it.
Do you play live?
Uh yeah. Anywhere there's a mic and a pa. Many special moments.
How, do you think, does the internet (or mp3) change the music industry?
The Internet is the best thing that's ever happened to music.
Would you sign a record contract with a major label?
Probably not right now. I would require all kinds of things that they probably wouldn't want to give me.
Your influences?
Lucinda Williams, Coldplay, The Police, Joni Mitchell. Singer Songwriters.
Favorite spot?
My favorite city is London, but I haven't been anywhere else in Europe yet. I think it will probably be somewhere in France.
Anything else...?
Any Podcasters out there get in touch with me! I want you to play my music ; )
